Lifestyle Advice

We often find it helpful to “coach” our patients on certain activities they should avoid or do differently as to not aggravate their particular health challenge. Our goal is to help every patient achieve a happy and healthy lifestyle filled with the activities they enjoy most.

Everyday stressors such as attitude, relationships, finances, work/school and time management can cause adverse health effects. We offer advice on these 5 key elements to help your body heal and better understand the Mind-Body connection.

  1. Exercise: There are three categories of exercise: strengthening, stretching and cardiovascular/aerobic. They are ALL important, but our focus at Angrist Chiropractic and Wellness Care is to restore flexibility, offer safe stretching and enforce core strength.

  2. Nutrition: Eating a healthy diet seems simple but can be very confusing. Here are a few simple rules to follow. Eat foods that don’t have labels: such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fresh eggs, nuts, seeds and water, versus foods that come in boxes and cans which contain chemicals, processed ingredients and preservatives. Eat foods that are the colors of the rainbow: for example, red for apples, orange for oranges, yellow for bananas, green for broccoli, blue for blueberries, indigo and violet for eggplant. When cooking, use cannola oil instead of butter or margarine, but make sure you use olive oil or flax seed oil for your salads. These are a few simple guidelines to follow that can have a big impact on your nutritional health.

  3. Posture: As I always say, stand proud, walk proud and be proud. When you act like this, you automatically have better posture. It’s all about raising the bar and being more conscious about your posture. Core stregthening, such as doing the plank is a key player for good posture.

  4. Sleep: Research tells us we need seven to nine hours per night of sleep to restore energy and give our body a chance to heal. Sleeping on your back or side with the appropriate cervical/neck support are the best postures. Sleeping on your stomach can create neck, shoulder and lower back strain.

  5. Attitude: Coming from a place of love, caring, giving and forgiving is much healthier than coming from a place of fear, anger, resentment, judgment or negativity. Just like the other four keys to wellness, you get to choose what type of attitude you want to have on a daily basis.
